As a Physical Therapist, I was trained to know the body and all of its wonderfully complicated systems. Through the years, I have treated clients with all types of diagnoses. While spinal cord injuries can be vastly different and complicated, our treatment mission is the same - improving function through a targeted exercise program. Move the body. Use the body.
There are thousands of research studies, scholars, and medical professionals with statistics and opinions on how and if a SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) client will progress in life. Many medical based facilities focus SCI rehab on preparing the client and family on how to be functional in the wheelchair... Not at Phoenix. One very important lesson I’ve learned as a P.T. is that regardless of the diagnosis, every client I see is composed of an individual mind, body, and soul. Every client heals differently. Every client feels differently. Every client moves differently. SCI clients have the ability - not disability - to rehab and recover. I have clients who were told they would never move anything below the neck again nor would they be able to breathe on their own. Not only have these clients proven the original prognoses wrong, they are completely surpassing them.
We think differently. We don’t know how much sensory and motor function will return in any of our clients, but we work each day with the mindset of gaining as much back as physically possible. And it works. Our clients are improving, moving, and using their bodies.
